Parquet Restoration Work We Do
Parquet gets the same three coats our team uses for floor polishing in Auckland, with extra prep for the pattern, the joints and loose blocks.
Herringbone, Chevron and Basketweave
Herringbone uses square-ended blocks in a zigzag, chevron uses blocks cut at an angle to form a V, and basketweave sets small groups of blocks at right angles. Each pattern sends the grain in a different direction. We set the sanding angle for the pattern you have, so the scratches from one pass are removed by the next.
Loose and Missing Blocks
A loose block sounds hollow when tapped and rocks underfoot. Sanding over it can tear it out, so we lift loose blocks, clean the old adhesive and glue them back down first. Missing blocks are replaced with the closest matching timber we can source. A replacement block in a different timber will show, and we tell you that before we fit it.
Dark Joints and Old Adhesive
Older parquet was often laid in black adhesive, which can creep up between blocks and stain the joints grey or black. Sanding removes surface staining, but adhesive deep in a joint can stay visible. Grey patches near doors and windows can also come from water. We point out which marks will sand out at the site visit.
Gaps Between Blocks
Parquet blocks shrink in dry rooms and swell in damp ones. A heat pump running all winter can open gaps that close again in summer. We fill gaps that stay steady all year. Filling a gap that moves only cracks the filler out, so seasonal gaps are best left alone.
Coats and Sheen for Parquet
Three coats of polyurethane protect parquet in hallways and living rooms. Water-based coats keep tawa and oak close to their natural colour. Solvent-based coats warm the colour and bring out the contrast between blocks. Dark stains show every cross-grain scratch on parquet, so most clients choose a natural or light finish.
Parquet Recoats
If your parquet is dull but the coating has not worn through, a buff and recoat freshens it without sanding the pattern back. Recoating every few years in a busy hallway keeps the coating between your feet and the timber. Once grey patches appear, the floor needs a full sand.
How a Parquet Sanding Job Runs
Five steps, with the repairs done before any sanding.
1. Call or send the quote form
Tell us the pattern, the room size and any loose or missing blocks you know about. We book a free site visit.
2. Tap test and written quote
We tap across the floor to find hollow blocks, check the joints and look for damp, then send a written quote with the repairs listed.
3. Block repairs
Empty the room first. We lift and re-glue loose blocks, fit replacements, and let the adhesive set before sanding starts.
4. Angled sanding and three coats
We sand at 40, 80 and 120 grit, change direction between passes, finish with a fine pass, then lay three coats.
5. Curing and care
Socks are fine after about 4 hours on water-based coats and about 24 hours on solvent-based. Furniture and rugs go back after about 3 days.
Parquet Floor Sanding Prices in Auckland
$70 to $80 per m²
A full sand and three clear coats costs $45 to $90 per m² plus GST, and most standard rooms land at $70 to $80 per m². Parquet with many repairs or a complex pattern can sit toward the top of the range, because it needs extra sanding passes and more edge work. A buff and recoat costs $30 to $45 per m² plus GST.
Block repairs move a parquet price the most. A few loose blocks add little, while a floor with many hollow or missing blocks needs a repair stage before sanding. Room size, dark joints and the sheen you choose come next. Your written quote after the site visit lists the repairs and the price.
Why Auckland Owners Trust Us with Parquet

Our floor sanders are qualified and the business carries insurance. Ask for the details at the site visit.
80% dust-free sanding
Extraction on our sanders captures most of the fine dust that parquet produces when sanded across the grain.
Repairs before sanding

Honest about joints
We tell you which dark joints and water marks will sand out and which will stay.

Auckland Parquet, Concrete Slabs and Moisture
A lot of Auckland parquet sits directly on a concrete slab, glued down rather than nailed. Many mid-century floors are tawa, a native hardwood that is harder than rimu and kauri, along with imported oak and jarrah in later homes. Glued blocks on concrete react to moisture from below and to the air in the room.
Timber moisture matters most when blocks are repaired or replaced. BRANZ notes that NZS 3602 sets the moisture content for timber flooring at the time it is laid as 8 to 12% in heated buildings and 12 to 16% in unheated buildings (BRANZ Bulletin 644, 2019). A replacement block that is wetter or drier than the floor around it will shrink or swell after it goes down, and the gap shows.
That is why replacement blocks should sit in the room for a while before fitting. We also look for signs of damp from the slab, such as lifting blocks or dark edges, before quoting a sand.
