Deck Restoration Work We Do
Deck work uses different sanders, grits and coatings from the indoor floors our Auckland timber floor sanding crew polishes, but the same rule applies: the prep decides how long the finish lasts.
Deck Sanding
We sand each board along the grain with belt and orbital sanders, and work into the edges and around posts by hand. Sanding takes off the grey surface layer, old flaking oil and the raised grain that gives you splinters. Raised nails are punched below the surface first so they do not tear the sanding belts. Soft or rotten boards should be replaced before sanding, and we point them out at the site visit.
Deck Oiling and Tinted Oil
After sanding we apply two coats of penetrating deck oil, letting the first coat soak in before the second goes on. A clear oil shows the natural timber colour. A tinted oil adds colour and gives the timber more protection from the sun, because the pigment blocks some UV. Stay off the deck for at least 24 hours after the final coat, and keep pots and furniture off for longer.
Kwila, Pine and Other Deck Timbers
Kwila is a dense hardwood that releases red-brown tannin when it gets wet, and that tannin can stain concrete and paving below the deck. Treated pine is softer, absorbs more oil and can need a heavier first coat. We match the sanding and oil to the timber you have.
How a Deck Sanding and Oiling Job Runs
Five steps, timed around the weather.
1. Call or send the quote form
Tell us the deck size, the timber if you know it, and when it was last oiled. We book a free site visit.
2. Site visit and written quote
We check the timber, the old coating, raised nails and soft boards, then send a written quote with the oil type and colour.
3. Clear the deck
Move furniture, pots, barbecues and mats off the deck before we arrive. We pick a dry day for the work.
4. Sanding and two coats of oil
We punch raised nails, sand every board along the grain, clean off the dust, and apply two coats of penetrating oil.
5. Drying and upkeep
Stay off the deck for at least 24 hours after the final coat. A maintenance coat each year or two keeps the oil working.
Deck Sanding and Oiling Prices in Auckland
Priced per deck
We price decks after the site visit, because two decks of the same size can take very different amounts of work. All prices exclude GST, and your written quote lists the sanding, the oil and any repairs.
Five things move a deck price: the deck area, how grey and rough the timber is, how much old coating has to come off, the timber species, and access for the machines. Steps, balustrades and decks high off the ground add hand work. A deck that is re-oiled every year or two costs less to maintain than one left until it needs a full sand.
Why Auckland Homeowners Book Us for Decks
Outdoor timber needs a different approach. Here is ours.
25+ years on Auckland timber
Our crew has sanded and finished timber across Auckland for more than 25 years, indoors and out.
Qualified and insured
Our sanders are qualified and the business carries insurance. Ask for the details at the site visit.
Sanded before oiled
We never oil over grey, flaking timber. Every deck we oil is sanded back to clean wood first.
Booked around the weather
We watch the forecast and move the date rather than oil a damp deck.
Oil matched to timber
Kwila, pine and other hardwoods each get the sanding and oil that suits them.

Auckland Sun, Rain and Frost on Your Deck
Auckland decks deal with strong sun in summer and damp in winter. NIWA records a January mean daily maximum UV index of 12.2 at Leigh, north of Auckland, which sits in the extreme range. The same report shows rain on about 183 days a year at Auckland Airport, and 27.4 ground frosts a year at Henderson in West Auckland, against 8.7 at the airport (NIWA, The Climate and Weather of Auckland).
UV breaks down the surface fibres of timber and turns it grey, which is why a north-facing deck fades faster than a shaded one. Shaded decks have the opposite problem: they stay damp, grow mould and moss, and in frost-prone suburbs like Henderson they stay wet well into the morning.
Oil needs dry timber and a dry forecast. We book deck work for settled weather, usually from late spring to autumn, and we move the date if rain is due within a day of oiling.

Deck Sanding and Oiling FAQs
Most decks need a maintenance coat every year or two. North-facing decks in full sun fade faster and may need oil every year. Re-oil before the timber turns grey to avoid a full sand.
